Home Grown Biodiesel a Relief at the Pump

ZEELAND, MIÑDoes your business run on fuel? Then you should know about biodiesel. On October 5, Zeeland Farm Soya, LLC, a division of Zeeland Farm Services, Inc. (ZFS), is celebrating the opening of MichiganÕs first 2 percent biodiesel refueling station from 1 to 4 p.m. The event will be held near ZFSÕ facility at 2468 Ð 84th Avenue in Zeeland.

Commercial and municipal fleets, governmental agencies, agricultural producers, and the general public are invited to learn more about cost-effective and cleaner burning biodiesel. A drawing will also be held for free biodiesel fuel.

Biodiesel is a non-toxic, clean burning, road tested, and domestically produced replacement for petroleum diesel. ItÕs made from fats and oilsÑtypically soybean oil. Biodiesel, which is usually blended with petroleum diesel, can be used in a modern diesel engine. Its use is cost-effective due to reduced operating and maintenance costs, financial incentives, and finite petroleum supplies. The use of pure or blended biodiesel reduces toxic air emissions, greenhouse gas buildup, and dependence on imported oil while supporting local agricultural economies.

Biofuel Brokers, a national biofuels marketer, will be hosting a ÒBiodiesel Information StationÓ at this event featuring exhibits, DVDs, and information about the economic, environmental, and energy benefits of biodiesel.

Zeeland Farm Soya, LLC, a distributor of soy biodiesel, operates the largest soybean processing plant in Michigan and the only soybean oil facility in Michigan. Its fleet, Zeeland Freight Services, Inc., has replaced its conventional diesel fuel with a premium biodiesel blend from the Pacific Pride refueling station located near their facility.

The 2005 Energy Act mandates a ÒRenewable Fuel Standard.Ó Therefore, an escalating percentage of all fuel sold in the United States must be blended with a renewable fuel. Biodiesel is an important part of meeting this requirement.
